HOME VINTAGE THE BLOG

I'm Abigail Bell. In January, I finished high school in a small town where I never fit in. A day later I packed up my car and moved to Charleston, South Carolina to await my destiny at Belmont University in the fall. There, I will be pursuing my dream as a music business major. Until Nashville, I must stay occupied by cramming in every last indie music show, walking up and down King Street in downtown Charleston in search of the perfect designer bargain, and frantically scouring the local thrift and vintage stores.

This blog is my way of keeping up with my new adventure of a life. A diary of vintage and bargain finds, DIY projects, music discoveries, indulges, and the evolution of style.

Join me in my Spring/Summer of self discovery.

These Cynthia Vincent gladiator wedges are perfect for summer but so ridiculously expensive.  Each pair retails for $405, but with a little website called Gilt Groupe, I snagged each pair for $128.  These babies aren't even marked down in stores yet!

  • charleston international film festival.

Saturday night, I went to the Charleston International Film Festival to see the short films.  Six short films were played.

The Predator's Return is about a former concentration camp survivor's revenge on the Nazi officer that murdered his entire family sixty years ago.  They just so happen to be living in the same nursing home...  (The writer/director was in the theatre with us so we were able to ask him questions after the film.)

Parts is about an extremely poor couple who has a boy dropped off on their doorstep.  The husband owes a great deal of money to a mob, so he decides that the boy is worth more money for his organs than he would be alive. (Disturbing...)

Doves is about a man named Aris who returns home to the small Greek island of Tinos to attend his mother's funeral.  Twelve years ago, Aris fled the island in regret of his best friend's death.  He must face the entire town who have not forgotten the events twelve years before. (Loved it.  In Greek with English subtitles.)

Beholden- I won't write a description since I found the trailer.

First Time Long Time is about a man with a 48 hour erection.  He goes to the doctor and they tell him to wait it out.  Despite his embarrassment at work the next day, his employees seem to disregard his condition and treat him better than ever. (So funny!)

The Outlaw Emmett Deemus and the Porno Queen- I found the entire short film!

  • oh, coachella.

I am so incredibly jealous of everyone who went to the Coachella music festival this past weekend.  The lineup was insane- David Bowie, Beirut, Morrissey, Silversun Pickups, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, Lykke Li, Okkervil River, Paul McCartney, Girl Talk, White Lies, The Cure... the list goes on and on.

"Abigail can you feel my heart in the palm of your hand

and do you understand why I can't stay Abigail an evil wind is blowing

through the land and they need every man to drive it away

When I come home if I come home you'll be a grown woman

When I come home if I come home don't be alone, Abigail, belle of Kilronan

Abigail's gonna be the beauty of County Galway and she will live always

in a world of love Abigail I'm off to the war but you can be sure

I will know you're what I'm fighting for..."

...Who knew ego-surfing could be this rewarding.  These lyrics are so beautiful and the song is pretty incredible, too.  Look it up and give it a listen.  It's called Abigail, Belle of Kilronan and it's written by The Magnetic Fields.  I'm thinking Abigail Bell Vintage anthem?

  • you say you want a revolution.

Since watching Milk with my sister on Sunday, I've  been strangely obsessed with starting a revolution.

    Chronicle/Terry Schmitt 1978

I think Harvey Milk is simply incredible and undoubtedly fearless.  If you haven't seen this movie, please make every effort to.  I don't care if you are homophobic, a man, a woman, or a senior citizen- watch this movie.  Everyone should know what the gay community went through to gain basic rights.

"Forty years and and I haven't done a thing that I'm proud of."

-who knew that by 48 he would have started a revolution.

  • roid rage.

While surfing the web, I came accross a Brooklyn based artist/photographer named Matt Schwartz.  His work has been featured in Nylon Magazine which obviously makes him worth checking out.  If you love vintage photography, you will love these photos- I know I do.  It is taking every ounce of restraint in my body not to purchase all of these incredible prints.

  • the marni bib necklace recreation.

Although it has only been in the past couple of months that I have become an avid reader of blogs such as Sea of ShoesThe Glamourai, or Karla's Closet, I have begun to admire the passion of their personal styles combined with their quirky personalities.

The very first post I read from The Glamourai was on her recreation of Marni's Fall 2009 runway bib necklace art (see post below for runway photo).  I knew from that moment on that I wanted to recreate this incredible "crumb catcher" as Kelly, a.k.a The Glamourai, calls it.  Sure enough, I made a trip to my parent's house and frantically rummaged through my old jewelry and trinkets.  This is what I came up with.

    my interpretation.

    the glamourai's interpretation.

What do you think?  Would The Glamourai be proud?

2: erickson beamon cocktail arcade ring

4: tarina tarantino crystal navajo turquoise ring

5: marni fall 2009 embellished bib necklace (not available for purchase i'm afraid)

    6: givenchy gold sandals

Unless you're blessed with ridiculously deep pockets, most of these items are out of the normal working girl's price range. Keep a watchful eye out for look-a-likes or even diy your own spring 09 accessories. You'll be surprised what is born when your fashonista flare combines with common household items and craft store goodies.

  • abigail bell: life on the d list.

Okay, so my friend William threw a D List party this weekend in light of his current obsession with Kathy Griffin. Beforehand, Cait and I went to a delicious restaurant downtown called Fig.

Cait and I then proceeded to the party where we were greeted by a bowl of strawberry mango punch and a group of adorable gay boys.
